USB Flash Drives
What is Flash Memory? It's a reasonable question when discussing compact flash drives (a.k.a. USB flash drives). Flash memory is a type of memory that retains content even when the power has been turned off. This is unlike RAM, which loses it once the power is gone. Flash memory allows data to be written or erased in huge blocks. Flash memory drives, such as the compact pen drives, connect to your computer via the USB port, and can transfer data at rates of more than 1MB per second. Initially, these USB drives were a simple design, with the part connecting to the USB port sticking out. However, new models come with snazzy designs and caps to protect the USB port connection. USB Flash Drive Innovations If you really want to feel like James Bond, there's a new product on the market just for you. It's a watch with a compact flash drive that connects to your computer via the USB port. According to Business Week, "the watches come in several different styles, including stainless steel, brass, and leather models. And they offer four storage options, from a thin, 16-megabyte version to a thicker, 128-MB timepiece that goes for $320. Perfect for smuggling sensitive documents outside of hostile zones." Even if you don't want to play spy games, USB flash drives are incredibly convenient. Since they're compact enough to fit around your neck or on a keychain (or even on a watch), these memory drives are easily carried from place to place. Travelers especially will find it handy to have all their important files so portable and easily connected through the USB port of any computer.
